Cyanotic breath holding spell absence or pause in breathing apnea that may be involuntary and is believed to be related to autonomic nervous system dysfunction. A breath holding spell is an episode in which the child involuntarily stops breathing and loses consciousness for a short period immediately after a frightening or emotionally upsetting event or a painful experience. In the long term care of children with convulsive disorders we have become increasingly aware of the frequent occurrence of a significant degree of anemia in those who have breath holding spells.
